GARDEN ROUTE ROAD TRIP The Garden Route is a popular road trip experience to do in South Africa. This approximately 200km stretch of lush flora, beckoning lagoons and lakes, picturesque beaches and vast wildlife makes for the ideal Southern African escape. You’ll be whisked away by the endless array of things to do and see, as well as towns to visit. The Garden Route stretches from Mossel Bay to the mountainous wonders of the Tsitsikamma. Along this exquisite stretch of landscape, you’ll find three of South Africa’s ultimate hikes, namely the Otter Trail, Tsitsikama and Dolphin Trails. The Garden Route is a year-round ideal destination. Both summer (December to February) and winter (June to August) offers tranquil getaways owing to the largely Mediterranean climate. Not sure what to do during your Garden Route road trip? Head to Gansbaai for epic shark cage diving, go whale-watching in Hermanus, attend the Oyster Festival in Knysna and dare to bungee jump from the Bloukrans Bridge. Adrenaline junkies looking for thrilling activities such as abseiling in the Wilderness National Park and kayaking along Storms River will be fulfilled. Those seeking a peaceful getaway in nature surrounded by emerald, lush landscapes and exciting wildlife will be equally satisfied. For unforgettable encounters with animals, visit Monkeyland where you’ll meet various primates. Avid bird watchers are encouraged to make their way to the Knysna Estuary, where you’ll have the chance of spotting the Burchell’s Coucal, African Fish Eagle and Spotted Eagle-Owls. Travel tip: Summer is high season as it is school holidays in South Africa. If you’re planning a summer vacation along the Garden Route, book your accommodation well in advance to avoid disappointment.
