Best time to go to Antarctica

WHEN TO GO

The icy desert of Antarctica only has two seasons; summer and winter. Summer in Antarctica is from October to February. This is when the sun never sets, it is the time of the Midnight Sun. The hottest month is January when temperatures reach a "high" of 0°C. Glaciers and ice melts, giving you the best marine viewing.

Winter in Antarctica is bitterly cold, often reaching temperatures as low as -80°C. Cruises to Antarctica are closed during this period & only the bravest researchers and scientists remain there during this period. Daredevil photographers might also remain; if only to capture the breeding season of penguins.

Heavy rains are unusual but winds can reach speeds of up to 320 km/h. Many activities revolve around the windy conditions, so excursions might be delayed due to weather conditions.

Antarctica is best visited between early November to late March. This is the height of the tourist season due to favourable weather conditions and greater wildlife visibility.

Regardless of the season, it's recommended that you pack the following:

Sunblock, sunglasses & a warm hat
Thermal clothing & socks
Waterproof jacket & shoes
Gloves
Binoculars
Spare camera batteries
